THE RIVER
THE RIVER
Running westward from mountain headwaters, the South Yuba River / / ’Uba Seo travels over 65 miles to meet its confluence with the main-stem Yuba River on the eastern shores of Lake Englebright. On this journey, serpentine waters wind through steep canyons of slick granitic rock, flanked by the Sierra Nevada mountains and foothills - woodlands thick with oak and pine, pocketed by dense thickets of manzanita and rolling swells of golden savannah.
This is the realm of Nisenan, Mountain Maidu, and Washoe, a watershed carved by the powerful forces of fire and water. Throughout the rainy season the river runs high and fast, jade green with sediment and snow melt. By summer the current grows steady, beckoning to locals and travelers alike who flock to its emerald waters to bask and bathe.
Born of an immense love for place amidst global poly-crisis, The South Yuba River Almanac seeks to illuminate the nature of our namesake waterway and the communities that surround it in writing, photographs, and art.

THE ALMANAC
THE ALMANAC
The South Yuba River Almanac is a collaborative literary publication. In its final form it will combine art and writing from many different contributors with a backbone of regional phenology and written natural and local history content. Think of it as a watershed defined by its tributaries, a painting made up of many tiny brushstrokes, a symphony.
Our print goal at this time is to produce a single publication in Fall of 2026 to distribute at cost.
Our hope is that the Almanac will be a gift and a love letter to place, accessible to a broad range of people, well distributed, read, and integrated with the ways we are all learning to better love and care for this watershed.
Please reach out to us at yubariveralmanac@gmail.com with any questions, commentary, or compelling inspiration. We are a community based project and would love to hear from you.
